Don’t be dissuaded by the fact that Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination. There are loads of isolated, hidden beauty spots if you care to look around and avoid the tourist traps.
Cherating, Malaysia
Cherating is a near-perfect location for newlyweds to retreat from hustle and bustle. It’s located far enough from the nearest city, which is 45km away. There are a few resorts there that offer all kinds of cuisines, including all the local delicacies.
If you feel like joining in with the other holiday-goers at the resort, there are themed cabaret shows every night to keep you entertained. Expect a lot of pampering by the staff, who will not allow one second of boredom to descend upon you.
Columbus Isle, Bahamas
Columbus Isle is another great place, particularly if complete seclusion isn’t really your thing, or if you and your partner want a little more fun to join in with. You could go diving and swim with hammerhead sharks and turtles. Or alternatively, you can go sailing, which might be a bit more relaxing.
If you tire of the tranqullity of the beautiful beaches and yearn for some action, there are plenty of sporting activities to get involved in.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
The Argentinean capital has emerged as one of the world’s coolest destinations in the last decade. European style and South American verve mix, creating a unique destination that feels familiar, but promises new discovery.
Neighbourhoods like Palermo and San Telmo, the home of the Tango, offer achingly cool boutique hotels, while the streets throng with shoppers by day and revellers by night. The nightlife is electric and the food, particularly the steak, is delicious.
If you’re after some r’n’r, head to one of the estancias – think a mix between a chateau and a ranch – in the pampas (the large, treeless plains of South America).
Seeing as it’s a good 15-hour flight away, South America is hardly somewhere you’ll be visiting regularly, but if you can’t justify a jaunt for your honeymoon, when can you?
